Body-oriented, sensory experiences are a key entry point for working with children whose behavior is dysregulated. Sensory Motor Arousal Regulation Treatment (SMART), was developed by a team of three psychotherapists and an occupational therapist—all child and adolescent specialists—with support from Bessel van der Kolk and the Boston Trauma Center, where the first SMART room opened in 2008.

SMART utilizes sensory motor stimulation such as bouncing, balancing, spinning, rolling, jumping, snuggling into a body sock, or building a protective fort.
We are Somatic Experiencing Practitioners (SEPs) who are also SMART-trained. We integrate elements of occupational, sensory motor integration, and expressive arts therapies into our practice.
